     This session will explore the unique opportunities available to, and unique challenges faced by, captive programs in the Insurtech space. Topics to be covered include examining the path of an Insurtech company to captive formation and implementation, assessing the benefits of a captive insurer versus other profit-sharing arrangements, working with fronts and reinsurers and navigating the cultural divide between insurance and tech.  The panelists will present a case study to illustrate these concepts and engage in an open discussion with the audience. 
     
    Learning objectives: Session attendees will leave being able to:  
                                 - Understand the considerations for an Insurtech company that go into the decision to form and implement a captive   
                                    - Understand the unique challenges and benefits of maintaining a captive program for an Insurtech company

Organization: Cowbell Reinsurance Company


Trent Cooksley is co-founder and COO of Cowbell Cyber. He is responsible for the strategic direction of Cowbell’s insurance operations and has built the company’s innovative cyber insurance portfolio along with its wide distribution network. As an insurance executive and three-time startup co-founder, Cooksley has held executive and investor roles in all stages of an insurance company's growth. Prior to Cowbell, he was Head of Open Innovation for Markel Corporation and Managing Director of Markel Digital, bringing to market numerous innovations such as the first pay-as-you-go insurance technology solution.


Organization: Artex


Mary Desranleau heads the Vermont captive management office of Artex specializing in captives and alternative risk financing solutions. She has extensive experience with a wide variety of captive companies, including single parent, sponsored, cell, and agency captives. She oversees captive program design, management, financial, and regulatory functions for captives. She is a certified public accountant, Chartered Global Management Accountant, and has her ARM designation with over 30 years of experience in accounting of which 19 have been in captive management.

Joe Holahan is a partner with Morris, Manning & Martin, LLP and a member of the firm’s Insurance and Reinsurance Group. His practice focuses on insurance regulatory, corporate and transactional matters, with an emphasis on the development and maintenance of captive insurance programs. Morris, Manning & Martin, LLP is a full-service law firm with over 200 attorneys. The firm is well known for its insurance and reinsurance practice. Joe is a board member and currently President of the Captive Insurance Council of the District of Columbia. He also is a board member and instructor for the International Center for Captive Insurance Education and a past Chair of the Vermont Captive Insurance Association Legislative Committee.


Organization: Palomar


Jason Sears is Executive Vice President and Head of Programs at Palomar holdings. He is responsible for Palomar’s Program, Fronting and Assumed Reinsurance operations. Mr. Sears began his career with Mutual Risk Management, setting up alternative risk vehicles for middle market insureds. He has held company positions at QBE and American Safety as well as executive positions at two MGA’s–Dual Commercial and Rivington Partners. Mr. Sears has served on the Board of a Risk Retention Group, Oxyx Insurance Company, an RRG, as well as several charitable boards. He is a graduate of Swarthmore College.
