    Captives are often ahead of the commercial market in developing new risk transfer products, regularly working with capital markets or other risk-taking organizations. This session will walk through several recent examples of captives leading the way in product innovation and solving emerging business problems in the “captive insurance laboratory.” We will hear from captive owners and other business experts who acted as problem solvers, risk bearers who accepted risks in new industries and consultants who assisted with transaction design and execution.

    Learning objectives – Upon completion, participants will be able to:
     
    • Understand the capabilities and limitations of traditional commercial insurance
    • Understand the basic elements of insurable risk, and the building blocks for insurance policies
    • Discuss case studies of insurance entities recently created to address new and emerging risks

Organization: Old Republic Risk Management


Paul joined Old Republic Risk Management in October 2009 with over 20 years of insurance industry experience. As Executive Vice President and a member of the leadership team at Old Republic Risk Management, Paul is involved with all aspects of client service and the day-to-day management of our account executives. He is also responsible for marketing and business development efforts. Paul holds a bachelor’s degree from Loyola University – New Orleans. He also holds the Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation from the American Institute For Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters.

Ed Koral is a Director with WTW’s Strategic Risk Consulting group. With over 35 years of experience with captives and other alternative risk funding programs, Ed assists clients in developing bespoke insurance and non-insurance solutions for their unique risk profiles. Ed joined WTW in 2021 after spending many years with Deloitte Consulting and BDO, as well as a large international brokerage firm. He also served briefly as risk manager for a large consumer financial products company, where he managed the operations of two captives. Ed has served VCIA in multiple capacities: as a Board member for six years and as a conference committee member. Currently, Ed serves on the faculty of the International Center for Captive Insurance Education (ICCIE).

Joseph Ziolkowski is the CEO and Co-Founder of Relm Insurance, Ltd., a leading global insurer for companies operating in emerging business sectors, including digital assets, web3, cannabis and alternative therapeutics, among others. With over a decade of experience as a risk management professional and insurance entrepreneur, Joseph has successfully launched two insurance company startups and executed alternative risk financing and transfer solutions.
