    The hard market is just that: hard. Premiums are increasing, carriers are still grappling with the impacts of COVID-19, and the landscape is seemingly unpredictable. This session will highlight the ways in which a captive can be used to combat hard market conditions–from the more conventional methods to outside-the-box ideas that will take a captive to the next level and safeguard against an unstable environment. We will cover different coverage areas, outline case study examples, and offer our thoughts for future market trends.  


     Learning objectives:  Our panel of experts includes an owner of a long-standing captive, a risk manager currently undertaking the formation of the organization’s first captive,
                                          and a P&C consulting actuary, offering unique perspectives that will allow attendees to:  
                                                - Understand how we arrived at these hard market conditions and what the ramifications are for insurance and benefits program
                                                     - Build a business case for captives in this environment that includes analysis of how they can be used to stabilizing force during uncertain times
                                                - Learn from other captives experiences and outline different ways a captive can be utilized that may not have been considered before.

Session Speakers


As Haskell’s Director of Risk Management, Jeff has the lead responsibility for mitigating systemic risk and procuring/managing the corporate insurance and bond program domestically and internationally. He is an experienced risk and insurance professional with 30+ years of experience in the commercial insurance space and 20 years of risk management development and implementation. Jeff began his career as a Commercial Multi-Lines Underwriter for a large, well respected regional financial corporation, followed by roles in the Insurance Sales and Marketing world, and finally to the Risk Management realm for a large multi-national conglomerate within the automotive industry.


Organization: Spring Consulting Group, LLC


Peter Johnson, FCAS, MAAA, is a Senior Actuarial Consultant with Spring Consulting Group, LLC, and Spring’s Property & Casualty Practice Lead. He has over 15 years of actuarial experience in reserving, pricing, alternative risk funding, risk optimization, captive feasibility and reinsurance risk transfer work. This experience includes workers’ compensation, medical professional liability, professional liability, automobile liability, general liability, cyber liability, mortgage insurance and other enterprise risks. Peter was recently recognized by Business Insurance as a 2019 Breakout Award winner, and in 2020, received Captive International’s Highly Commended Individual Actuary award. Peter also serves as a faculty member of International Center for Captive Insurance Education’s (ICCIE’s) actuarial course. Prior to joining Spring, Peter was the President and Consulting Actuary with Bartlett Actuarial Group and a Consulting Actuary with Milliman. Peter has given industry presentations, published articles, and served on various committees in both the Casualty Actuarial Society and captive insurance industry. Peter earned a B.S. in applied math and computer science from the University of Wisconsin - Stout. He is a fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries.

Mary Ellen Moriarty is vice president, Property & Casualty for College Insurance Company. Mary Ellen has been actively engaged in the insurance industry for over thirty years in positions within national insurance brokerages as well as commercial insurance carriers. She joined EIIA in 2002 focusing her considerable insurance experience on the higher education industry group.
